Second million begins with contribution from Lakewood Church
HOUSTON – Alex Bregman, famed third baseman for the Houston Astros, has increased his fundraising goal and now will raise $2 million for the Houston Food Bank.
To kick off the push to that second million, Mr. Bregman today met with Lakewood Church Pastor Joel Osteen, who along with wife Victoria donated $100,000 to FEEDHOU/Alex’s Army, the name given to the fundraising effort. In addition, Pastor Osteen invited Mr. Bregman to discuss the FEEDHOU donation drive with him, which the church will include as part of this weekend’s online streaming services.
“We raised $1 million in the first week and with this donation, we are well on our way to million number two,” Mr. Bregman says.
The campaign launched April 10 is aimed at feeding Houston-area residents experiencing food insecurity during the COVID-19 crisis. Proceeds from the campaign directly benefit the Houston Food Bank, a nonprofit committed to feeding the hungry in the Houston area.
Mr. Bregman along with local entrepreneur Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale each committed $100,000 to kick off the drive. And Houston rapper Paul Wall showed his support by creating a special album entitled “Frozen Face – Vol. 3 – FEEDHOU edition.”
In addition to the Lakewood Church help, Alex’s Army is also receiving support from Houston’s KPRC 2, which collected money from viewers and donated all of it – $50,000 – to the FEEDHOU effort.
“I can’t thank KPRC 2 and all the others who have supported this effort enough. It is wonderful to see everyone come together to help others,” Mr. Bregman says.
