Houston Explosion Raises Concerns About Unlawful Solicitations of Clients by Attorneys

In the wake of the massive explosion that leveled a warehouse in Houston on Friday morning, the State Bar of Texas issued a public warning about reports of possible barratry – the unlawful solicitation by a lawyer or someone working for a lawyer seeking clients without a prior relationship. “Many people don’t realize that solicitation is a third-degree felony if convicted,” says Dallas attorney Tom Carse, who represents individuals who have been taken advantage of by unscrupulous lawyers. “It’s really a systemic problem that is the underbelly of our profession, and one that’s all too common after a man-made or natural disaster.” Mr. Carse encourages anyone who believes they’re been improperly approached to get the name and contact information of that person and call the police or contact the State Bar.
