In our pilot episode of Keep It Legal, we caught up with U.S. Magistrate Judge Derek Gilliland the day before he was sworn into the bench in Waco.
The cyclist, certified EMT and firefighter, active wakeboarder and now-judge says, “I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas.”
25 percent of all intellectual property cases in the U.S. are filed out of the Western District. There were 970 cases alone in 2021.
Judge Gilliland’s advice for young lawyers: seek out and accept as many opportunities to argue hearings or try cases. The more you can get in front of a judge or jury early in your career the better. Volunteer for every opportunity you can.
