The Dallas Business Journal:
At the heart of most tax controversy is a difference of opinion — namely an employer's opinion of how tax laws should be interpreted, versus the opinion of the IRS and the courts.
Some Texas businesses, for example, are of the opinion that one particular tax, the franchise or margin tax, should be done away with altogether.
It is the opinion of the Supreme Court, however, that this tax remain in place, says David Wheat of the Dallas office of law firm Thompson & Knight LLP, who characterizes the fights against the tax as "real uphill battles."
While most businesses are not intentionally looking to shirk their fiscal responsibilities, having an attorney that can guide a firm through the Texas tax codes can eliminate a lot of legal headaches down the road.
