The Dallas Morning News:
It never ceases to amaze me how a bunch of lowlifes can aim to exploit people’s generosity and compassion for the less fortunate, especially this time of the year.
They will try to trick you into believing that you’re making a needy family’s holiday special — when in fact you’re lining the pockets of crooks.
That’s exactly why you have to be very careful with your charitable donations during this season of giving.
“Everyone has giving on their mind, so it’s natural to think of giving to needy causes or favorite charities,” said Jeannette Kopko, spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau of Metropolitan Dallas. “And seasonal appeals by charities help focus donors’ attention on those organizations.”
If you’re considering a donation, your first step should be to research the charity.
You want to donate to a cause that aligns with your values, so make sure you understand the charity’s mission.
“Giving wisely to a charity isn’t just about making sure that the solicitation isn’t coming from scammers,” Kopko said. “Wise donors make sure their donations are going to charities that are best-equipped to help in the relief efforts and responsibly use the money for its intended purpose.”
Know whom you’re giving to. “Sometimes organizations use a name that’s very similar to a well-known charity, or several charities may work to address a single issue,” Kopko said. “Make sure you’re giving to the group that you have in mind.”
Here’s what else you need to know if you plan to donate to a charity:
....
Keep your cash
Tyree Collier, a partner at Thompson & Knight in Dallas who represents nonprofit organizations, advises donors not to give cash.
Write a check to the charity, not to an individual. This will help ensure that your money goes where you intend. It also will help you document the donation for your records and for your tax return.

“It’s best to make contributions with a check or credit card to help assure that the funds are used as intended, and donors should be sure to get a receipt or acknowledgement from the charity with the date and amount of the contribution,” said Collier.
