Dallas Business Journal:

Two Dallas-based law firms are expanding their offices to California in moves designed to increase the firms’ market share in the Golden State.

Business litigation firm Rose·Walker LLP is lining up attorneys to open a three-lawyer office in Los Angeles, to be led by 33-year attorney Mike Terhar, said Martin Rose, founding partner and managing partner of Rose·Walker. Terhar’s legal experience focuses on aviation, product liability, premises and general liability cases. The office will open in January, and discussions about potential attorney hires are under way, Rose said.

“For us, California is a vibrant state,” Rose said in a phone call from Los Angeles. “There’s a lot of litigation out here. There’s a lot of demand for our approach to problem solving, and we don’t think the playing field is too crowded.”

Rose·Walker will grow its three-person office as client demand dictates, Rose said. Many of the company’s California clients are in the aviation and aerospace industry, a specialty in which Rose·Walker has built a national reputation. The firm also expects to pick up plenty of work in the intellectual property, commercial litigation and employment dispute areas, Rose said.

“Many of our clients are aerospace (companies), but they have diverse legal issues as well,” he said.

This will be Rose·Walker’s first office outside of Dallas, where the firm has 18 lawyers. The firm handles litigation nationwide.

Los Angeles has been a hotbed this year for law firm mergers, with at least five instances in which outside firms have acquired smaller firms, according to data from legal consultancy Altman Weil. Nationwide, 43 law firms merged this year from January through September is 43 — up 79 percent compared to the same nine-month period in 2010, according to Altman Weil MergerLine.
