In the highly competitive field of business law, Chambers rankings separate the best from the rest, law firms say.

Every year, Chambers & Partners conducts thousands of in-depth interviews with clients and lawyers across the globe to assess the reputations and expertise of business lawyers. It then ranks the firms and compiles them into lists, largely organized by geographic region.

Qualities that factor into Chambers' rankings include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, diligence and commitment.

"One of the ratings sticks clients do focus on is Chambers, because their criteria involves interviewing clients," said Jeff Zlotky, managing partner for Dallas-based Thompson & Knight LLP. "As a firm, we're always delighted to be well-regarded in the Chambers rankings."

Chambers listed Thompson & Knight as a Band 1 law firm — the highest level possible — in several areas this year, including real estate and antitrust law. The firm also made the list in other areas, including banking and finance, bankruptcy/restructuring, technology, mergers and acquisitions, tax, environment, labor and employment and litigation.

At Thompson & Knight, the Chambers rankings are used in marketing materials, in presentations to clients and for firm-to-firm recruiting, said Becky Jackson, the firm's client services director.

High rankings can be great motivation, Zlotky added.

"We use it internally to motivate," he said. "Our message internally is: While this recognition is great, we have to live up to the recognition in every single engagement."

McAtee agreed that strong rankings by Chambers has marketing value.

"We certainly like to point that out to our clients and to the marketplace," he said. "We feel like the Chambers distinction is one that has value, and we let our clients and potential clients know about it."
